Visit the wonderful island of St. Lucia - Home of the drive-in volcano!
St. Lucia is a beautiful tropical Caribbean island found in the Caribbean Sea bordering
the Atlantic Ocean. Some of its closest island neighbors are St. Vincent & the Grenadines,
Barbados and Martinique. St. Lucia is the perfect place to go when you are looking
to take a relaxing vacation, an island getaway, an exciting adventure, or just some
fun in the sun. With a friendly (primarily English speaking) population of approximately
160,765, the locals in St. Lucia are open, warm, kind and helpful. Additionally,
St. Lucia is 620 km2 of wonderful and exciting things to do, not to mention the
picturesque sites and breathtaking views.
The island of St. Lucia is one of the more mountainous islands found throughout
the Caribbean; with its highest point at the peak of Mount Gimie which stands 3,
120 feet above sea level. Eleven quarters can be found in St. Lucia with its capital
being Castries. The other ten (10) quarters are Anse la Raye, Canaries, Choiseul,
Dennery, Forest, Gros Islet, Laborie, Micoud, Soufrière, and Vieux Fort. Also, some
major towns include Gros Islet, Soufrière and Vieux Fort. It should be noted that
the island’s whether system consists of two seasons: the wet (May- December) and
dry (January- April).
St. Lucia is notoriously known as the “Helen of the West Indies” as a result of
its constant switch in colonial leadership between the French and the British who
fought fourteen (14) wars before the British finally took full monopoly over the
small island in 1814. As a result, St. Lucia’s culture has strongly been influenced
by African, French and British heritage. However, St. Lucia finally gained its independence
on 22nd, February, 1979 and became apart of the Federation of the West Indies and
the Commonwealth. Similarly, St. Lucia is now an active member of the Organization
of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Previously,
St. Lucia’s economy was based mainly on banana production; however, the main source
of revenue today is offshore banking and the tourism industry. Many traces of St.
Lucian history can still be found in various parts of the island.
So, when you’re looking for adventure, fun, entertainment, excitement, relaxation,
rest, or leisure; come visit St. Lucia. St. Lucia is the only place in the world
where you will find a drive-in volcano. Also, have fun while touring around the
island and don’t forget to visit places like: Sulfur Springs, The Botanical Gardens,
